A well designed diabetes diet, a diabetic meal plan and a schedule for exercise is a good start. You will need to consult a dietician because there is no such thing as the standard diabetes mealplan. It will depend on things like your current weight, your age, your profession (wheter an office worker or a lumberjack) as well as your age. Diabetes is a chronical disease, it will not go away - but you can keep it under control and still maintain a reasonably normal life. As a general guideline in your meal planning: The amount of food in a day will nead to be evenly spread out over the hours you are awake. A good start would be: 3 main courses and 2 snacks. The diet could be as follows: 1/4th of the energy goes into the breakfast; lunch and dinner 1/3 each and the rest is split equally among the snacks. Diabetes and smoking Don't. Smoking is not good for you in the first place but in the case of diabetes it is even worse. With diabetes type 2, the risk of problems due to bad blood circulation are larger than for non-diabetics and smoking adds to that problem. By quitting smoking you will also improve your body's sensitivity to insulin which is exactly what you need with type 2 diabetes. Do you need to loose weight? Your BMI (body mass index) should preferably be around 26 and below. Exercise! Take a brisk walk for half an hour, at least 3 times a week. Other types of exercise - workouts etc are also good if you don't feel like walking. What can you eat? In short - little but often. Lots of fibres and carbohydrates. Use the "Plate model", increase the amount of slow carbohydrates and decrease the fast carbs. Focus on food with low glycemic index.
